artsdigitalphoto.com: My_Galleries
My passion is night photography, especially shots of the Milky Way and other sky photos, taken from dark locations in the Southwest. I do all kinds of photography from commercial to fine art.
I'm also a writer of novels and non-fiction books, and I am marketing all of my books in spite
of the state of the publishing industry.

This gallery is a mix of many kinds of photography. I'm tempted to just have two galleries: Astrophotography and Everything Else. So, really, this is my Everything Else gallery. Okay, I have Pets, Landscapes, People, all that stuff.
You don't have to look at those galleries unless you're really hooked on my work. I'm happy if you just look at one or two of my astrophotography compositions. I could pretend that I'm famous; hey, that's a good idea. I'm a famous phtoographer with a growing reputation. You're going to pore over every iota of my work as if it's significant and profound. There, I've given your instructions. Look at my work. Prepare to send checks for signed copies of my prints. They're a fantastic investment. Be one of the early purchasers of the work of Art Rosch.
Yeah....

In November, 2005, my partner and I
made a journey in a small RV to Arches
National Park. Our earlier journey,
in '02, resulted in major life changes;
the photos I took from that trip have
been published, won awards, and helped
me make a living from photography. This later adventure has been a more mature effort; our experience helped us achieve a deeper intimacy with the magnificent park, and the camper helped my photography by giving me a home, on my back, like that of a turtle. The camper's name is Yertle.

I love night photography. I am setting up this new gallery to show some of my recent images, taken wandering around the SF Bay Area after dark.

The Golden Gate Bridge and the cityscape
of San Francisco are some of the most
photographed items on the planet. It's ALL been done....or has it? I'm interested in creating fresh views of this compelling subject. I love the look of it. Just because it's a cliche doesn't mean I can't approach
it from a new direction.

Everone loves landscapes. There are
so few ways to take truly new photographs
of the same old subjects. I haven't
come up with any ideas. Dan Heller does
amazing work. Look at Gary Minish. Those are good
landscape photographers. I'm only so-so. You have
to wake up really early and get cold and
wet to be a good landscape photographer.
I've been up all night taking astrophotos; I'm just crawling into my
sleeping bag about the time good landscape photos are happening.

People        slide show (34)
The rules for writing these category descriptions is that I get a thousand characters. I know just about a thousand characters. I'd love to take their pictures. I like 'stealth' photography.I hate posed self-conscious photos. Good candid shots require either good photographic skills or a fast auto focus camera and a lucky streak. People either loathe getting their pictures taken or they're all over the photographer; they can't get out of their own way, let alone mine.
I'm working on it.

Expressions on human faces change about once every hundredth of a second. That's why people look so funny in snapshots. I have superhuman vision and can see at one three hundredth of a second, which is why people look so great in my portraits and studies.

What photo website would be complete without a section for pets? I don't have pets, I have 'visitors'. Some of these think they live here. Others know they live somewhere else but prefer my company. And, yet, others are perfect strangers who know that my wife and I are suckers for animals. The racoon's name is Bob. He's actually Bob the Third, I knew his grandfather and his grandmother Babette. The raccoon pictures are terrible, just snapshots. Somewhere in my files I have a good shot of the original Bob, about ten years ago. I can't tell you why we haven't been attacked and savaged by these creatures. I know that a raccoon is dangerous! I wouldn't mess with a strange raccoon for all the weed in Oaxaca. I suppose knowing the Bob dynasty has
given us protected status.

Players and Conveyors of Music        slide show (9)
I've been a musician for forty years. I've played jazz with some great people, and did a stint as drummer with the R&B legend, Zoot Prestige. He was my friend and mentor. Unfortunately, he died in '96 when he swallowed his mouthpiece during a long solo. In this gallery we will see the talented people with whom I proudly associate. I wish I had a picture of Zoot. I have a painted portrait by Starr, which I will scan into this site as soon as possible. You can, however, acquire his records, "Hot Sauce", "Hot Box" and "Hot Chitlins for Lovers", on the Snooze Loose Label. Truth is, I don 't have any good musician photos. I haven't been hanging out with
musicians since I got into photography. I've been going out into the bush where
astronomers like to go, not into clubs
and concerts. I just thought it would be nice to have a gallery, just in case.

Vacation Photo Diary        slide show (6)
In July of this year ('03) we spent five
days atop Mt. Pinos. This special place
in California's Los Padres Range is loved
by astronomers and mountain bikers. In
general terms, the two groups don't get
along, but I am both an astronomer and
a mountain biker, so I don't know what
the fuss is about.

© Arthur Rosch PhotoID# 460978: Woman Views the Sea Bimini Journey        slide show (10)
We traveled to the small island of Bimini in the Bahamas, in order to meet and swim with dolphins. The experience was memorable, to say the least. There are a lot of plain old snapshots here; photography on a moving boat isn't easy.In spite of taking almost six hundred photos, barely twenty or thirty made the cut. I'm building this gallery for the many great friends I made on the Bimini journey.

© Arthur Rosch PhotoID# 788870: Ren and Joel Bethel High School Workbook Gallery        slide show (4)
I mentor the students at Bethel High
School in Vallejo, California. Under
the gallant sponsorship of their teacher,
"Ms.R". we keep alive a photography program that is surviving against all odds.
These are great kids who are being
exposed to a creative art form in
an educational system that doesn't
value teaching creativity. For this
reason, I volunteer my time, to bring
something more to these kids. We
have become like family. I can't pay
enough tribute to Mrs.R for her incredible support of these young people.

Photo Gear        slide show (5)
I am hot for digital photography. When
I use film, I feel as if I've gone blind.
Until recently, the need for noise-free long exposures left me with two options: buy a five thousand dollar CCD camera or
use an old film camera like a Nikon FM2. Since
I couldn't afford a CCD chip, I went the latter route. Most
of my sky shots were taken with Fuji NPH 400 film.
The camera has been mounted on a
motorized scope. This has changed since I bought a Canon 10D digital SLR. I have used the Canon D30 as my digital camera, a nice camera but not for sky photography. The 10D is more capable and I will be producing digital sky images from now on. The thing about film was that I hated waiting to see if any of my negatives turned out, hated scanning them, hated stashing them in little envelopes.
My apologies to lovers of Tri-X, Super-Pan Velvia Portra
Sensia silver oxide nitrogen gassed pressurized film in cans!
Long live the CMOS and CCD!
